The acclaimed television series Rex, a different policeman has become an unforgettable classic that marked a before and after in the way of conceiving stories of action and camaraderie between humans and animals.
Originally broadcast between 1994 and 2004, and later between 2007 and 2015 – the plot moved from Austria to Italy -, this television phenomenon tells the adventures of Rex, an intelligent German shepherd, and his human companions in solving crimes. With a total of 209 episodes spread over 18 seasons, the series managed to captivate the global audience, being recognized with multiple awards for its originality and exciting plots.
Rex, whose full name is Reginald von Ravenhorst, is no ordinary German Shepherd. After the death of his owner in Vienna, this exceptional dog joins the police force, where his tracking skills and unconditional loyalty make him an indispensable member of the team.
Adopted by Agent Moser, the friendship and bond they develop is unbreakable, showing the power of the connection between a human and their faithful four-legged companion. Later, he would have other owners with whom he would also become inseparable.
Over the years, five German shepherds have given life to Rex. However, only the first three have information about their lives.
The first to give life to Rex. Not only was BJ a dog with a natural knack for on-screen stunts and police work, but he also enjoyed training him as if it were a game. His trainer, Teresa Ann Miller, highlighted his ability to perform complex physical feats, such as jumping through windows of simulated sugar. He retired when he was 6 years old and died in 2003 at age 12, leaving an indelible legacy like the original Rex.
He is Rex’s son – the character, not the dog who plays him – and he proved to be a worthy successor. Also trained by Teresa Ann Miller, Rhett continued the series’ tradition of canine excellence, retiring after several years of loyal service. His life after his retirement was peaceful until his death in 2011 at around 14 years old.
This dog, who was also a student of Teresa Ann Miller, brought a new spirit to the character when the plot moved to Italy, keeping the essence of the series alive and proving that Rex is eternal, regardless of the dog that plays the role. He died in 2014, two months before his 14th birthday.
