The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) publishes seasonal fruits and vegetables every month. This information is very valuable, since it “helps contribute to the maintenance of sustainable agriculture and protect the environment,” says the agency.

According to the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), consuming fruits and vegetables within their natural cycle prevents forced cultivation of them and stimulates local production. As they are not imported products, there is a saving in the cost of transportation and, consequently, the price of food is also reduced.

Another advantage of buying seasonal fruits and vegetables, according to this organization, is that they maintain all their properties because they grow to their natural size. Likewise, its flavor is better.

For all this, the main Spanish health and food organizations recommend consuming seasonal and local pieces, of different varieties and colors. In this way, a healthy habit and commitment to the entire environment is encouraged, at a local, environmental and nutritional level.
