The apple is one of the most useful foods when it comes to making a simple and healthy dessert. In our country, especially during the autumn season, it is common to make roasted apples with the excess production of the harvest to make the most of this fruit and prevent it from being wasted. Or at any time of the year if you want to treat yourself to a sweet, low-calorie treat! What you may not have known is that you can simplify this recipe even more without having to turn on the oven: you just need a small space in your freezer.
Pippin or Golden apples are best suited for roasting. To start this trick that will change your life, the first thing you should do is wash and dry the pieces of fruit thoroughly and without removing the skin, of course. Next, if you want to achieve a gourmet finish in your recipe, you can use a utensil called a corer, which will help you cut and remove the core and seeds – remember that they contain cyanide – and the upper stems.
You can take advantage of this moment to add, to your liking, sugar or another type of sweetener to the holes. Remember that apples have a significant content of fructose, glucose and sucrose, so if you want to reduce the calories of this dessert, choose not to add additional sugars. Next, wrap the apples separately in aluminum foil and put them directly in the freezer for at least 24 hours.
After this time, you can take the apples out of the freezer, with the necessary time before eating them. You should put them in the refrigerator for approximately 5 more hours and, finally, take them out to room temperature. When you remove the aluminum foil, you will see that the skin has the characteristic rough appearance of baked apples and that no ice crystals have formed. You can take out only the apples that you want to eat and leave the rest in the freezer for next time.
Before serving your ‘roasted’ apples, you can optionally season them with cinnamon to taste or with a splash of liquid caramel. You will see that its texture is nothing different from those you have made in the oven all your life. If you like them warm or hot, you can give them a brief touch in the microwave so that they now look like they just came out of the oven. Et voila! You will have a homemade, easy and economical dessert ready to enjoy.
