Identifying the lactose content in a cheese may seem like a challenge, but with the right information, it is possible to make more informed decisions about our dairy intake. Unlike milk protein allergy, lactose intolerance is a more complex and varied issue, as it depends on the individual’s ability to produce lactase, the enzyme necessary to break down lactose.
Many dairy products, such as cheese, do not always have it highlighted on their packaging that they are suitable for intolerant people. So how to identify it? The nutritionist @blancanutri gave some tricks on her TikTok account
As he explains in his video, “all you have to do is look at the amount of carbohydrates it has because lactose is the milk sugar that belongs to carbohydrates.”
So, if you check the product label and see that it has zero carbohydrates, that cheese is lactose-free. In addition, there are also some cheeses that are low in lactose, containing, at best, 0.5 or one gram. Depending on each person’s level of lactose tolerance, because it is variable, it could be consumed or not.
The nutritionist details, in the text of her video, a series of “naturally lactose-free cheeses”:
Of course, although it explains that there could be more, it details that it is important to check the label of each product. Furthermore, he points out that “if you have many symptoms taking very little lactose, your problem is probably more related to the milk protein than to the lactose.”
