Contrary to the fact that the president of the Spanish Government, voluntarily immersed in a period of reflection on his future, it does not seem that the Popular Party has to rethink its strategy to follow and yesterday raised the pressure on Pedro Sánchez even more.
It was the general secretary of the PP, Cuca Gamarra, who denounced the “victimism”, “tacticism” and “podemization” of the head of the Central Executive with a battery of reproaches after which she appointed Alberto Núñez Feijóo as the alternative to lead the country.
In view of the secrecy surrounding Sánchez’s decision, the PP has no choice but to return again and again to the letter published by Sánchez himself on Wednesday. And after the statements on the eve of both Feijóo and his spokesman, Borja Sémper, Gamarra took the witness stand yesterday to accuse the socialist leader of “criminalizing” judges through an “irresponsible” strategy that only seeks to make a fuss about the his figure
The general secretary of the People’s Party reduced the new edition of Sánchez’s “survival manual” to a simple “show more typical of teenagers” and called the socialist phenomenon of “constantly seeking polarization with a Spain of blocks where you side with Pedro Sánchez or you go against Pedro Sánchez”.
The majority feeling in the Génova party is that, despite “this last episode of the telenovela that he directs and stars in”, Sánchez will not leave the post. And that, on top of that, he will submit to a matter of confidence that has won given the interests of the pro-independence parties in relation to the pending processing of the Amnesty law.
Although, just in case, he is wrong in his calculations, the PP are “prepared to return to Spain what it needs”, which is “a policy worthy of the Spaniards and the great country that is Spain”.
“We have a project and we also have a president [Feijóo] who can be president of the Government of Spain if all the Spaniards want and who obviously is absolutely far from the spectacle we are experiencing in Spain and this use of politics for personal benefit” , he declared.
The Popular Party believes that it has studied all possible scenarios. In fact, a Feijóo press conference is already organized for Monday at the headquarters in Genoa as soon as Sánchez makes his decision public.
Nevertheless, Gamarra preferred caution and did not want to assess the possibility of opening a hypothetical new round of consultations with the King: “Spain deserves a responsible president who executes a policy at the height of the Spanish and of the great country that is Spain (…). And the PP will not enter the realm of lucubration generating more instability”.
Questioned by the lawfare denounced by the PSOE and its coalition partners, the popular co-spokesperson framed the debate in the “podemization” of Sánchez to try to criminalize the opposition, denounce the media that have published information about his wife, or criticize the judges . “Pablo Iglesias left the central government, he left the Council of Ministers, but his spirit stayed there and was reincarnated no less than Pedro Sánchez, who we see denounces that there is lawfare instead of defending that in Spain there is a State of law”.
When asked if in this context, and as long as Sánchez continues as president, she sees it more difficult to reach an agreement to renew the General Council of the Judicial Power (CGPJ), the general secretary of the popular asked to wait and see ” how this chapter goes.” “The renewal depends and will always depend in the future on guaranteeing the independence” of the governing body of the judges. “We have not left the table – in relation to the mediation of the Commissioner of Justice of the European Commission, Didier Reynders -, but we are not moving from our principles either”, he added.
