There is nothing worse than being the protagonist of one of those “earth, swallow me” moments. Even worse is if you are a famous person and it happens to you in front of a large audience, because the chances are that that moment will be shared ad nauseam and you will become the next viral meme.
This is precisely what happened to actress Anne Hathaway, who was a guest on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show and became the absolute protagonist of a super uncomfortable moment for asking an innocent question to the program’s audience.
The actress wanted to know if anyone in the audience had read the book on which the novel is based, written by Robinne Lee, and asked the question spontaneously. However, she got a stony silence in response, something she probably didn’t expect at all.
A moment that, obviously, Jimmy Fallon did not miss. The comedian took the opportunity to break the uncomfortable silence with a joke and assured: “No, we don’t read. “This is The Tonight Show,” he explained to Hathaway, who was covering her dead face in shame.
“You can go to Stephen Colbert if you want to have people read books,” added the well-known comedian, referring to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, its main competitor along with Jimmy Kimmel Live!. As expected, the audience burst into laughter, while the actress tried to pass the bad time.
“You should read it, it’s fabulous,” the actress told them, trying to get over it. “You have a great book in stores. It is time for you to read.”
The actress and the comedian tried to return to the interview, but not before joking a little more. Hathaway wanted to “integrate” with the program, even asking “what a book is” and noting that “somewhere, there would be a fan of the book” on which the movie is based.
It must be said that the actress handled the moment like a true professional, and did her best to return to the interview in any way possible. Fallon’s intervention, all things considered, was masterful.
The actress’ fans on social media appreciate that she is able to laugh at herself, something that few celebrities seem capable of doing. “She has taken the blunder and turned it into something iconic.” “She is charming, she is not only beautiful, she is charming,” said another. ”A fantastic interview. “I won’t read the book, but I will see the movie the day it comes out,” says another.
The actress is known for her sense of humor and how she takes jokes at her expense. In the 2015 film Trainweck, Amy Schumer and Bill Hader make a joke at her expense for carrying her Oscar everywhere when she won it, and she didn’t hesitate to respond elegantly.
