On Friday afternoon, Sonsoles Ónega’s program, And Now Sonsoles, addressed one of the most striking cases of recent hours: a Spaniard had been trapped in the ICU of a health center in Mexico after having spent 92,000 euros.
On March 14, Juan José and Carolina traveled from Tenerife to Mexico to reunite with their daughter, who lives there, and enjoy a unique experience. However, what the couple did not expect was that their dream trip was going to turn into a real nightmare. Days after his arrival in the country, Juan José began to feel unwell. ”He had fatigue, cough and shortness of breath,” Carolina revealed.
After going to the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with blood clots in his legs, lung disease and alveolar hemorrhage. A delicate medical condition with which they had to admit him to a private center at first. But due to the high costs, they had to transfer him to a public one. Still, the family had to use his life savings, about 92,000 euros.
As if all this were not enough, the couple traveled to the country with medical coverage, but the insurance company wanted to ignore the situation because they say that Juan José traveled while he was already sick. ”My husband weighed 96kg and he must be 75kg now. I just want to go to Spain, where I know they will take care of him,” Carolina declared.
The Antena 3 program connected live with Monterrey to speak directly with Juan José’s wife and daughter. ”He is still in the ICU, he has been in the ICU for 20 days now and he is still intubated, sedated, and the doctors have told us that since he has been intubated for too many days they are going to have to do a tracheotomy because otherwise he runs the risk of having an infection,” he revealed. Maria Victoria.
Juan José’s health has all the members of the family in suspense, who in turn have to face the exorbitant hospital expenses. ”They are not charging for the preparation of the medicine, for applying the medicine, for having to go to the laboratory, more than 1,060 gloves, an outrageous amount,” they said. After being aware that these expenses were unaffordable, they transferred Juan José to a public center, but first they had to deposit all the money for the private hospital expenses.
Regarding the insurance with which they traveled to Mexico, María Victoria said that it had medical coverage of up to 60,000 euros. ”When we told them that I was in the hospital, they told us to send the initial reports, a few days later they said that they couldn’t cover anything and that they couldn’t help us because what my father had had already come from Spain. We don’t understand it because he was perfectly fine (…) We are still fighting to get that money back,” the young woman explained.
