Next Sunday, May 12, the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia will be held and many citizens have chosen to cast their vote by mail to avoid going to the polls on voting Sunday. Until May 2, citizens could request a vote by mail, and those who have requested it will be able to cast it until today, Thursday, May 9.
There are three groups of people who can vote by mail in the upcoming elections on May 12. Firstly, those who live in Catalonia, but wish to vote by mail for whatever circumstance.
Secondly, those who are registered, but reside temporarily outside of Catalonia: either in the State or in any foreign country on a specific basis (Studies, Erasmus, international scholarships, temporary work in the state or abroad, etc.) . Finally, those who permanently reside abroad, but have the right to vote in these elections. It is the so-called CERA vote, the census of resident people who are called absent.
The deadline to request a vote by mail for the next Catalan elections ended last Thursday, May 2. This document could be requested on the Correos website, through a recognized electronic certificate, or at any company office in person.
Once requested, you should have received the documentation and ballots at the indicated location by May 5 at the latest. With this documentation you can cast your vote by certified mail in person and with valid official identification at any Post Office.
The deadline to send the vote by mail to the corresponding table will close today. Initially, the deadline was Wednesday, May 8, but Correos announced that citizens “would have more time to cast their vote” and extended the deadline until today.
If the documentation does not reach the recipient within the specified period, the status of the procedure can be checked through the electronic headquarters of the National Statistics Institute (INE) and through the Correos web portal with the application identification number.
If the procedure is accepted, but there is some incident with the sending of the documentation, the voter can go to the Post Office where they submitted the application, or to the Electoral Board to request to vote at the table if they are in the city where that is registered.
In cases where the voter cannot request a vote by mail due to illness or disability, the voter must prove this with a medical certificate that will be included in the vote application form. The voter must also accredit the person authorized to collect the documentation in a notarial or consular manner. The postal employee will be in charge of collecting the documentation.
