The collapse of the roof and the interior of a building under construction located in the Old Town of Bilbao has left five workers injured and, for just over an hour, has raised fears for the physical integrity of two workers who had been trapped. These two people, however, have already been rescued before noon and are unharmed.
The accident occurred at half past ten in the morning, the time at which firefighters received a notification of a collapse in a five-story building at number 24 Tendería Street.
This is a building that is under construction and, at one point, the work could have affected the structure, which would have caused the roof of the building to collapse on the workers.
Five workers who were inside have been injured and two people have been trapped. Shortly before noon, however, all the workers had been rescued and were already outside the building.
The mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, has clarified that the rehabilitation was being carried out in compliance with all the legal requirements and parameters, and has pointed out that a part of the building could have come loose as a result of the excessive debris that had been placed in a zone.
Likewise, the first mayor of Bilbao has indicated that, apart from the two rescued workers, four of the five injured have been able to get out on their own, while a fifth has suffered hip and femur fractures.
