The Leonese boxer Antonio Barrul has been denounced by the man he hit on May 1 after accusing him of being an “abuser” for attacking a woman in the presence of her daughter while a children’s film was being shown in a movie theater in León, which the athlete himself had attended with his wife and children.
An incident whose images became viral on social networks, and in which you can see how the boxer tries to mediate between the aggressor and his partner, in vain. The man began to insult him, and ended up confronting Barrull, who punched him several times, causing him to fall to the ground.
The athlete received a lawsuit shortly after, as Barrul himself has confirmed, ensuring that the issue is already in the hands of a lawyer, who would have advised him to reach an agreement with the plaintiff to avoid going to trial.
Some of the spectators present in the cinema applauded Barrull’s attitude, ensuring that he had done well defending the woman. The boxer himself wanted to apologize to those present in the room, and in the video you can hear him saying: “I’m very sorry, it really hurts me.”
The plaintiff, whom Barrul attacked, had previously been reported by the Police for an alleged crime of gender violence. After the altercation, the man was taken by the police to the police station, where he gave a statement following a complaint from his partner and spent the night until he was brought to justice on Thursday, after which he was released with charges.
The boxer acknowledged that he regretted the violence used, but he could not help it, because the situation “overcame him” when he saw his children and his wife crying at what was happening; insisting that a man cannot be allowed to mistreat a woman, because it is unacceptable.
According to Barrull, it all started about half an hour after the start of the screening, when he heard a man who began to insult the woman next to him. Suddenly, he saw how he “hooked her by her neck” and began to struggle with her, even hitting a girl who was next to the couple and who had nothing to do with them.
The president of the Boxing Federation of Castilla y León, Arantxa Lorenzo, showed her support for the boxer and assured that he would not have to be sanctioned and that even the Spanish Federation, which is aware of what happened, has no intention of doing so although We will have to wait for the final decision.
Barrul, one of the most promising boxers on the national scene, was nominated as the best debutant of 2023 by a specialized portal, and has begun his professional career at super bantamweight, after more than a hundred Olympic boxing fights.
