The president of the PP, Alberto Nuñez Feijóo, appeared today for the third time at the Cercle d’Economia with a much harsher speech than on previous occasions. In a clear electoral context, the popular leader has focused his intervention on reiterating the criticism against the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, from the previous day in Congress and has cast doubts on the health of the Spanish economy.

Feijóo has repeated his criticism of the “radical, selfish and quarrelsome policy” of the Executive. “This policy is not good for my country. The first characteristic is not revolving around the objective needs of citizens,” he claimed. In his opinion, there is no political project. “The Government has broken down twice in 48 hours. There is only a parliamentary majority to carry out the amnesty law,” he lamented.

Regarding his diagnosis of the economy, the leader of the PP has paraphrased the president of Cercle, Jaume Guardiola, when pointing out that Spain is in “economic mediocrity.” “Tomorrow Sánchez will come to say that the economy is going like a rocket, but the data does not show that,” he stated. The popular leader has pointed out that Spain ranks 21st of the 27 European countries in growth since the pandemic. “We do not generate wealth,” he added.

When asked by Guaridola himself, the opposition leader has taken a position on issues related to the Catalan economy, such as the financing system. “The financing system is not enough. It is essential to change it because there are three Autonomous Communities that have a debt that they will not be able to pay: Catalonia, Valencia and Murcia,” he assured. In this sense, the leader of the Spanish right has pointed out the need to open the financing folder of the health system because it is the largest expense that affects the autonomies

Feijóo has recovered several proposals from the PP in the last regional campaign. “We continue to think that the tax asphyxiation of citizens is inappropriate and produces poverty. We continue to think that water is more important than opening embassies. We think that housing, housing occupation and public health should be determining issues in the next Generalitat and that Barcelona must stop being one of the most insecure cities in the European Union,” he stated.

Regarding the takeover bid for Banco Sabadell, the popular leader has tiptoed. “Since the Government does not inform us, I say what my party says in Catalonia: we don’t like it,” he said. Feijóo has indicated that he will read the verdicts of the CNMV, CNMC and the Bank of Spain, but has stated that a takeover bid for a bank that is doing well must be very well justified.
