The walls and fortifications of Tortosa (Tarragona) will be connected by a green circuit starting next year.
The new route will allow you to visit this entire heritage complex, “of a unique wealth in Catalonia and one of the most imported in the State”, highlighted Mayor Jordi Jordan. The circuit can be done on foot and especially by bicycle.
The objective is to include this asset in the cycle tourism offer of the city and the Terres de l’Ebre, and link it to the Greenway.
The project will cost 886,078 euros and is fully financed by the Spanish government with European funds. It includes two parking lots and rest areas, electric bike charging points and photovoltaic lighting, and a new stormwater drainage system.
The new green circuit that will connect the entire heritage complex of walls and fortifications of Tortosa is one of the actions financed by the tourism sustainability plan in destinations of the Ministry of Industry and Tourism.
The Tortosa City Council has 2 million euros for the project and will allocate 886,000 euros to the adaptation of this route that will allow visiting and making use of the more than 6 kilometers that are preserved from the city’s historic bull runs.
Mayor Jordi Jordan has stressed that the circuit will make this heritage complex of fortifications, declared of national interest, “be an economic, social and tourist boost to the city” and will allow “finally” to connect all that heritage that is now a must-visit. in isolation. The commitment that the route is cyclable is linked to the importance of cycle tourism in the territory whose banner is the Greenway.
The mayor has insisted that the territory has an “important strategy to promote cycle tourism” with the Via Verda, which will now connect with the Ebro delta with the works being done to extend it to Amposta and La Ràpita, and “Tortosa must be located within this offer from Terres de l’Ebre”.
“Now many people come to the city and pass it by and the network of walls that they can visit by bike should also be an attraction for tourists,” said Jordan.
