Initiative-Compromís will hold its General Assembly this Saturday in Paterna (Valencia) with the aim of “reconfiguring the political space” of the left. An ambitious objective for such a small party that wants to take advantage of the uncertainty experienced by the parties to the left of the Socialist Party to reinforce Compromís and even go beyond it to reach beyond the ideological borders of the Valencian coalition. Initiative forms, together with the even smaller VerdsEquo and the majority Més Compromís, the Compromís coalition.

The documents that will be debated today in the assembly aim, in the short term, to transform Compromís into a federation of parties and not a simple electoral coalition (what it is currently) with the idea of ????speeding up and making the decision more effective. of decisions and internal agreements, which are always tense when it comes to configuring lists and candidates.

However, the management of Initiative-Compromís explains to La Vanguardia that the long-term objective and whose message will be launched more explicitly in the assembly is to take advantage of the political context to build bridges with other formations in the political space with the idea of ??enlarging Compromís. “We have to have a broader role, not close ourselves off, and we have to focus on reaching those people who supported the parties to the left of the PSPV in 2015.”

This reflection is made by a party leader who emphasizes the need to address that almost 35% that voted in 2015 for progressive forces other than the PSPV: Podemos (11.6%), Esquerra Unida (4.2%) and Compromís itself (18.7%). “We cannot close ourselves in anymore,” he says as a clear warning to his Més Compromís partners.

They want to address these voters with a renewed message and who knows if a new leadership that may (re)emerge in the future. They believe that Compromís is in a position to lead it – they do not dare to point out with what formula and the opportunity to reach agreements with other formations such as the EU is not disregarded – given the evidence that Sumar’s formula has not generated the necessary enthusiasm. and Unides Podem was already left out of the Valencian political scene after the regional elections of last March 28.

It is not an easy path and the result of the European elections will greatly affect the relationship with Sumar, with whom Compromís reached a fairly favorable agreement in extremis. Furthermore, at the return of the summer it will be Més Compromís – the old Bloc – that will reconfigure itself and respond to this entire changing political context in the political scene to the left of the PSPV. Where, furthermore, it cannot be ruled out that some very relevant political actor who has moved away from the front line will be incorporated.
