Microplastique Blends Toy-Instrument Experiments on Debut

Microplastique, a unique quartet in the Chicago music scene, is making waves with their playful yet purposeful musical experiments. Led by percussionist and composer Adam Shead, the group’s debut album, “Bare Blow Bloom,” showcases the diverse talents of its members.

A Playful Fusion of Talent

The quartet consists of some of Chicago’s most active and innovative improvisers. Molly Jones and Ben Zucker bring their expertise in woodwinds, percussion, brass, and toy piano to the table. Along with Josh Harlow, who also dabbles in toy piano and percussion, they explore a sound world that marries two distinct musical practices from the mid-20th century.

Embracing Musical Freedom

Microplastique’s music draws inspiration from John Cage’s groundbreaking work with the toy piano in the late 1940s. The use of handheld percussion and unconventional instruments like toy bells and clown horns further adds a layer of creativity to their sound. This experimental approach allows for dynamic improvisations that can range from delicate atmospheric pieces to lively, energetic performances.
