San Diego County health officials have reported a significant increase in flu cases compared to last year, with over 1,200 cases already recorded, up from about 730 cases during the same period last flu season. Dr. Kaveh Bahmanpour from Sharp Community Medical Group expressed surprise at the high number of cases for this time of year, as flu season typically peaks between the end of the year and spring.
To prevent the spread of the flu, health officials recommend avoiding contact with sick individuals, practicing good hand hygiene, and most importantly, getting the annual flu vaccine. Dr. Bahmanpour emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated each year, as the flu virus strains can change. He clarified common misconceptions about flu vaccines, explaining that they contain dead or inactive viruses that cannot cause infection.
Despite myths that the flu vaccine can give you the flu or is ineffective, Dr. Bahmanpour reassured that the vaccine is effective in preventing severe cases of the flu. Last flu season, nearly 20,000 people in San Diego County contracted the flu, resulting in 1,500 hospitalizations and 60 deaths. The flu shot is typically available from late August to early September, and Dr. Bahmanpour recommended getting vaccinated before November to ensure immunity against the flu.
In light of the increasing number of flu cases in the county, it is crucial for individuals to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their communities. By getting vaccinated, practicing good hygiene, and staying informed about the flu, we can work together to reduce the spread of the virus and prevent severe illness. Stay healthy and stay safe, San Diego!
