A woman in Florida has been found guilty of second-degree murder for leaving her boyfriend to die after he was zipped into a suitcase in their home. Sarah Boone was arrested four years ago in the death of Jorge Torres, and a jury in central Florida handed down the verdict after deliberating for about 90 minutes. Boone had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Boone told detectives that she and Torres had been playing hide-and-seek in their Winter Park, Florida residence and thought it would be funny for Torres to get into the suitcase. After a night of drinking, Boone went to sleep, believing her boyfriend could get out of the suitcase on his own. However, when she woke up the next morning, she found Torres unresponsive in the suitcase.
Videos found on Boone’s cellphone showed Torres yelling that he couldn’t breathe from inside the suitcase. Boone claimed during the trial that past violent incidents between them made her feel threatened and she was acting in self-defense by keeping him in the suitcase. The autopsy report revealed that Torres had injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.
Boone had gone through several attorneys, leading to delays in her trial, which lasted 10 days. She is set to be sentenced on December 2nd and could face life in prison for her actions.
