Washington is adding a new attraction for tourists that gives them a unique experience of being inside the Oval Office. The White House Historical Association is opening “The People’s House: A White House Experience,” which will feature an exact replica of President Joe Biden’s office, complete with his desk, chairs, and even the family Bible. This replica will be updated to reflect the office of the new president once Biden’s successor takes office next year.
Visitors will have the opportunity to sit in the president’s chair, take calls, and even have their photo taken in the replica Oval Office. The center will also include an “Immersive Theater” that uses technology to transform into various rooms in the White House every five minutes, allowing visitors to experience different aspects of the historic building.
The replica Oval Office will feature exact replicas of the wallpaper, draperies, furniture, and artwork currently found in the real Oval Office. A digital column in the center of the room will show visitors how the office has evolved throughout different presidencies and can also turn into a mirror, reflecting the visitors standing in the Oval Office.
The “Immersive Theater” will showcase five rooms on the White House State Floor, providing historical information and allowing visitors to interact with the exhibits. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to see how presidents use the White House for various functions, such as Cabinet meetings, state dinners, and family gatherings.
The education center will cover three floors and will use technology to teach visitors about the history of the White House, the presidents, and the staff who have worked there. Admission to the center is free, but visitors must request timed tickets, with the association expecting around 800 visitors per day.
The White House Historical Association raised $60 million for construction and initial operating costs and is working to build a $50 million endowment to sustain operations. The association, created in 1961 by Jacqueline Kennedy, is a nonprofit organization that relies on private donations and merchandise sales to fund its activities.
The new immersive education center aims to enhance the White House public tour experience and bring White House history to life through technology and innovation. First Lady Jill Biden, who visited the center during construction, is excited about the opening and plans to celebrate the event on the White House lawn.
