Last summer, Kost, a poet-director-writer-performer, was eager to create an event of their own after a long tour with a children’s theater company. They discussed ideas with their roommate, Christian Borkey, the manager of Lincoln Lodge, and decided on combining poetry readings with a comedy show. Kost reached out to poets Kailah Peters (“K.P.”) and Emily “Lee” Goldstein, and Giggle Hour was born after a series of brainstorming sessions at coffee shops.

Giggle Hour, which takes place on the first Tuesday of every month at Lincoln Lodge, is marketed as “a poetry show that’s not a total bummer” on Instagram. The event features a variety of performances from stand-up comedy to rap, creating a lighthearted atmosphere that sets it apart from other poetry events. Attendees, like writer Mikee Parangalan, appreciate the balance between humor and seriousness in the series, especially in difficult times.

The organizers of Giggle Hour believe that incorporating comedy into the show makes the vulnerability in performers’ work more digestible for the audience. This approach allows for a unique way to address serious issues while still providing entertainment. The series has garnered a dedicated following, with attendees hungry for COVID-safe events and eager to participate in activities like doodling competitions.

One of the most anticipated elements of Giggle Hour is the audience participation segment called “Silly Libs,” where attendees shout out words Mad Libs-style between performances. The series also focuses on equity, bringing in diverse performers and ensuring that everyone involved in the show is paid. The organizers hope to expand Giggle Hour to other locations and continue to create a space where everyone feels included.

As Giggle Hour enters its second year, the organizers are looking to host shows on the south and west sides of Chicago to reach a wider audience. With a commitment to diversity and inclusion, the series aims to provide a platform for performers and audience members who may feel marginalized in other spaces. By focusing on community engagement and creating a welcoming environment, Giggle Hour hopes to continue growing and evolving while staying true to its roots of humor and creativity.
