A freight train derailed in Matteson, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, on Thursday morning, leading to the evacuation of some residents living within a mile of the crash site. The incident occurred near the 21000 block of Main Street at around 10:45 a.m., as reported by FOX 32 in Chicago.
Officials stated that the Canadian National Railway (CNP) train derailment resulted in a hazmat situation due to a leaking train car, according to ABC 7 Chicago. Consequently, homes in the vicinity were evacuated for safety measures.
Residents living within a mile south of Main Street and 217th Street, as well as areas a mile west of Main Street and a quarter of a mile east of Main Street, were under a mandatory evacuation order. Those affected were urged to prepare for a potential “long-term evacuation” and advised to bring along necessary medications or supplies before leaving their homes.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries as a result of the train derailment. Representatives from the Canadian National Railway are en route to the scene to spearhead the investigation into the incident. It was reported that approximately 20 freight cars carrying various substances were involved in the derailment, although the exact cause of the accident remains unknown at this time.
