Protesters caused chaos at the Travelers Championship on Sunday when they disrupted the final hole at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. Scottie Scheffler was on the 18th green, aiming for victory, when multiple protesters stormed onto the course. The protesters released gas canisters as police quickly moved in to apprehend them.
As authorities worked to remove the protesters, golf fans in the crowd expressed their displeasure with boos and profanities. Some of the protesters wore T-shirts featuring the extinction symbol and the phrase “No golf on a dead planet,” indicating their status as climate change activists.
Despite the interruption, Tom Kim managed to force a playoff against Scheffler by securing a birdie on the final hole. However, Scheffler ultimately emerged victorious, clinching his sixth win of the season and his second playoff triumph.
Protests disrupting sporting events are not uncommon, with activists making appearances at NFL games and NBA contests in the past. While the tournament continued after the protesters were removed, the incident undoubtedly added drama to the already tense final moments of the Travelers Championship.
Scheffler’s win, coming just two days after his 28th birthday, solidifies his position as a rising star in the world of golf. Fans can stay updated on all the latest sports news by following Fox News Digital’s sports coverage and subscribing to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
