Golden Horse: Texas Barrel Racer Shines at Buffalo Bill Rodeo

North Platte, Neb. — A remarkable barrel racing horse named Truck, owned and cared for by Stevi Hillman of Weatherford, Texas, has been making waves at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte. Truck, a 17-year-old bay gelding, has consistently performed well at the rodeo, winning money in five out of the six years he has competed.

In 2017, Truck and Hillman set the arena record with an impressive time of 17.17 seconds, marking the first of their two first-place finishes. Their second victory came in 2022, with a time of 17.44 seconds. Additionally, the duo secured a second-place finish in 2021, an 11th place in 2020, and a sixth place in 2016.

Known for his love of running barrels, Truck particularly enjoys competing in large outdoor pens, according to Hillman. The horse’s enthusiasm for rodeo season is evident, especially during the spring months when he is always eager to hit the arena.

As the unofficial kickoff to the summer rodeo circuit, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo holds a special place for Truck. Hillman attributes part of Truck’s excitement to the anticipation of traveling and competing throughout the summer. Describing Truck’s personality as “hilarious and needy,” Hillman shared that the horse thrives on pampering and attention.

Despite Hillman’s multiple qualifications for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, she has only ridden Truck at the prestigious event once. Truck’s preference for large arenas with ample space to run led to the decision to avoid smaller venues with long alleys that can cause him stress.

In addition to Truck, Hillman will be bringing three other horses to the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, including her second horse, Bridget, and two young 5-year-old mares in need of seasoning. The couple also raises and trains barrel horses, with their stud, TSH Pendleton, serving as the foundation of their program.

Truck’s lineage traces back to renowned barrel racing horses, with his registered name being Cuatro Fame. Hillman affectionately refers to him as her “gold child,” highlighting his reliability and consistency in competition.

Fans can catch Hillman and Truck in action on June 13, the second night of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte. The rodeo is scheduled to take place from June 12-15 at the Wild West Rodeo Arena, with nightly showtimes at 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $11 to $24 and can be purchased online or at the gate.
