It’s safe to say Cannon Beach Bakery (240 N. Hemlock Street, Cannon Beach; 503-436-0399; cannonbeachbakery.com) knows what they’re doing with over 50 years in the business and four generations of bakers under their belt. Begin your morning routine with a hot coffee from the espresso bar and a freshly baked goodie whether it be a traditional glazed Atlasbet doughnut, maple bar, fritter or bear claw or a more unique choice such as the Swedish Tosca bar, a sailor jacks muffin or a more savory quiche. Regardless of your choice, don’t leave without taking home a loaf of their magnificent and famous Haystack Bread – made from scratch from start to finish, every time. Aside from being a bakery, deli options are also available. Diners can expect to choose from a couple of breakfast sandwiches or build their own creation! Tip: build your own sandwiches with the family, grab a coffee and head down to enjoy your haystack sandwich right on the beach near Haystack Rock. Cannon Beach Bakery is also great for those special occasions as assorted pie and cake flavors are available for pre-order! Hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Monday; closed Tuesday.

Hearing the story about Grand Central Bakery (2230 S.E. Hawthorne Boulevard, Portland; 503-445-1600; grandcentralbakery.com) selling out by 1 p.m. on opening day in their first Portland location back in 1993 made me reminisce back to the same happenings at my cake shop in Salem; there’s nothing else like that feeling! You may have seen one of their multiple Portland locations or visited them for a treat at the local farmers markets, and if you have you’ve likely tasted just why that was. They craft breads to perfection: crusty on the outside, chewy on the inside making it nearly a crime when not eaten fresh, warm and generously buttered. All locations serve a variety of traditional sandwiches for both breakfast and lunch as well as seasonal options, homemade soups and fresh, crisp salads. Plus, what’s a bakery without muffins, croissants, fruit tarts, cookies, pies and other made-from-scratch treats? For an extra sweet treat, try the monkey muffins made with chunks of their from-scratch croissant dough baked into a caramel-pecan sticky bun. The fun and the smell of freshly baked goods doesn’t have to stop there. U-bake chocolate chip cookies, chicken pot pie and pizza dough can be purchased along with ready-to-use pie dough and puff pastry, making life a little easier and a little more fun for busy home cooks. Visit their website for recipes and ideas. The Hawthorne location is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily; serving breakfast all day. See website for other locations and hours.
