Uvalde’s Adelyhda Perez won a silver medal and Reagan’s Christian Bonney, Johnson’s Diana Jones and New Braunfels’ Leilani Vital each captured bronze Saturday at the UIL wrestling state championship at the Berry Center in Cypress, just outside of Houston.

Perez (42-3), a sophomore, was aiming for her second straight gold medal in the Class 5A 148-pound division, but lost to A&M Consolidated’s Za’Maia Marshall.

Bonney was third at 170 pounds, Houston Clear Springs’ Kyle Kretzer. Bonney (46-9) rebounded after dropping his opening bout Friday to earn a spot on the podium.

Jones (48-4) defeated Conroe Oak Ridge’s Annamarie Crixell in 6A’s 110-pound division, while Vital (47-7) took down Euless Trinity’s Paisley Zandi at 148 pounds.

Smithson Valley’s Ariana Mendoza was fourth at 185 pounds, losing to Katy’s Courtney Garza in the third-place encounter. Johnson’s Garrett Matthews placed fifth after dropping his championship semifinal match to Allen’s Alonzo Herrera.

Johnson’s Garrett Matthews was fifth in 6A’s 120-pound competition.

On Friday, Steele’s Henry Willoughby failed short in his bid for back-to-back state titles at 220 pounds. Willoughby, who had to forfeit his regional-final match after injuring his right knee, lost his opener. He responded by winning his second bout before losing to Southlake Carroll’s Jacob Doddridge to end his run.
