SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A former New Jersey man accused of damaging the wrong car while attempting to target his ex’s new boyfriend now faces additional charges of filing a false internal affairs complaint against a police officer, authorities said.
Ajinkya Kelkar, 21, of Boca Raton, Fla.
Ajinkya Kelkar, 21, formerly of South Brunswick, anonymously called police Feb. 12 to report that police officers were sent to a house party on Davidson Mill Road and had covered up the incident, Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said in a release.
The officer involved in Kelkar’s earlier arrest was alleged to be part of the supposed coverup, which police investigated and determined to be false, Hayducka said.
Police then traced the anonymous call to Boca Raton, Fla., where Kelkar had moved, according to Hayducka.
Kelkar apparently believed the misconduct allegations could prevent the officer from testifying in Kelkar’s upcoming court proceedings in March on charges of trespassing and third-degree criminal mischief, Hayducka said.
“He did all this in an attempt to delay the justice system and his day in court,” Hayducka said.”We take all complaints seriously and investigate them to the fullest extent. In this case it resulted in criminal charges.”
Kelkar now faces an additional charge of filing a false report.
Kelkar was arrested in May after slashed tires and scrawling obscenities on the cars parked in the driveway of a house on Friendship Road he believed belonged to his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, police said.
But it was the wrong house. Kelkar allegedly caused $10,000 in damage.
Kelkar is currently on house arrest Boca Raton on charges stemming from a fatal drunken crash in Florida in July, according to police. He faces DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash, among other charges in the unrelated incident.
