MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans use radio waves and magnetic fields to create images of some areas of the body. Your doctor will ask you to undergo an MRI scan to validate their initial diagnosis and to help them determine the best corrective action needed to treat your ailment. A tube-like structure is used to produce the magnetic fields and radio waves. You will be asked to lie down inside the tube to begin the scan.

The process lasts for around 20 to 60 minutes, and it can be used for various parts of the body including but not limited to the spine, breasts, brain and bones. Medical practitioners mostly recommend patients to undergo MRI scans if they suspect a tumour or cyst growth, organ problems, and bone injuries.

How to book a session

You cannot schedule an MRI scan without your physician’s referral. The doctor will have to conduct a diagnosis to determine which regions of the body will need an MRI scan. The radiologist will need this to compare with the image results.

Once you have obtained the referral form from your physician, your next step is to submit it to your chosen clinic for an appointment. Some companies may require you to submit the form personally, but others will only ask you to send it via email or fax.

Cost of a private MRI

For a private MRI scan in London, you may spend around £200 to £700. As for the northeast or the greater regions, it may cost you about £475. The rates are different in other parts of the UK. It’s better if you contact a few radiologists and compare their prices before you finally choose one.

MRI preparations

On the day of your scan, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire. Some of the questions they will ask you include if you’re under any form of medication or if you’re pregnant. Such queries are essential to avoid complications caused by the audio and electromagnetic waves. They will determine if you have any metal in your body, such as fillings in your teeth, or any previously fractured bones.

You will be required to remove any metal accessory. In the case of women, if you have a bra with an underwire, you will also be asked to remove it during the scan procedure. For claustrophobic kids, the physician may offer a mild sedative to help the patient relax.

After the MRI scan, the radiologist will read the images and submit his or her findings to your physician.

Apart from MRI scans, there are other tests used to create images of your internal organs. Your physician could ask you to undergo additional tests like X-rays, ultrasound or a CT scan.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you are in doubt. Your physician and the radiologist will provide everything needed to help you understand how the process works, the possible side effects and the dos and don’ts you must remember.
