He asked the public to join him in applause in St. Peter’s Square.
Francis clapped his arms in a gesture of “great thanks” to health workers and volunteers who care for the sick. Italy celebrated Sunday as a national day of respect for health care workers.
The Italian national professional association for dentists and doctors lists 370 COVID-19-dead physicians.
Francis stated that it was important to recall all the nurses, doctors, and volunteers who are near the sick and make them feel better. He made this comment in his weekly visit from the Apostolic Palace window overlooking the square.
Francis stated that no one can save themselves. “When we are sick, we need someone to save us and who can help us.”
He was proud to call out “the heroic health-care personnel, who made clear this heroism during COVID times but the heroism still remains every day.”
Francis added, “For our doctors and nurses, volunteers, applause, and a great thanks.” The square below saw hundreds of people clapping, and he began to clap.
