After deluging some parts of Florida, Tropical Storm Alex was heading for Bermuda. It also caused three deaths in Cuba.
Alex strengthened after it became a tropical storm on Sunday. It moved across the Atlantic from Florida to make its way through the country, leaving streets inundated and motorists stranded.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Alex had weakened and sustained maximum winds of 65 mph by Monday morning. On Tuesday, further weakening was possible. It was located 140 miles northwest from Bermuda, and moved east-northeast at 28 mph. This motion will continue until Tuesday when the storm is submerged.
On Monday, the storm was forecast to move just north of Bermuda. The island was under a tropical storm warning. Forecasters predicted that it could drop between 1 and 2 inches of rain on Monday.
Michael Weeks, Bermuda’s national security Minister, stated that emergency services are monitoring the storm.
Authorities reported that the storm system had earlier killed three people in Cuba and damaged dozens more homes in Havana.
Some parts of South Florida were affected by road flooding Saturday due to heavy rains and strong winds.
Dan Gelber, Miami Beach Mayor, said that the storm tested drainage pumps installed by the city in response to climate change’s increasing flooding.
Gelber stated that while the water was removed quickly, some areas were difficult.
Alex was partially rescued from Hurricane Agatha’s remnants. The hurricane struck Mexico’s southern Pacific Coast last Wednesday, killing at least 9 people and leaving five others missing.
