Reddit users attacked a woman who claimed that her husband and she had skipped the catering of their wedding to be able to afford a Mickey and Minnie Mouse appearance.
“My fiance and I just got married two months ago and we had our dream wedding,” the post, made by Reddit user throwaway_family9525, read.
“However,” wrote the user. She is a self-described Disney fan and “about a month ago my aunt began posting on Facebook about how disappointed her aunt was with the whole thing. A few people sided with her.”
“The cost of having both Minnie and Mickey (30 minutes) was nearly exactly what our parents had budgeted for our catering. So we scheduled them during our first dance and our wedding photographs. We forgoed served food, though there were plenty of facilities at the venue that allowed people to eat ….. She wrote:
Moderators removed the post and stated in the thread that they “remove comments from feeds for many reasons, including keeping communities civil, safe, and true to their purpose.” Reddit’s Rule 8 states that posts should be truthful and reflect any recent disputes you have had that require arbitration. This means that there are no parodies, satires or shitposts.
Online commentators speculated that the post was fake.
Reddit users are not reachable. Reddit spokesperson did not respond immediately to a request for comment. Disney Weddings did no immediate respond to messages through their online portal or social media accounts.
The post circulated on social media in just two days. Many shared screenshots and wondered why the couple chose Disney entertainment over food.
On Monday afternoon, “Minnie” became a trending topic on Twitter.
According to Fast Company, AITA has “become the most important destination for finding out if you are in the wrong or to tell someone else that they are in the wrong” in recent years. Fast Company reported in 2020, “only making AITA more essential, full of surrogate assholes who will sub in for heartless politicians, corporate overlords.”
Reddit’s bride stated that it cost $2,750 for a 30-minute session with Mickey Mouse and Minnie. The two Disney characters were hired on two separate days. Later, she clarified that the actors “joined me and my husband as well as our photographer to a private lunch.”
Many of the nearly 2,400 comments to the bride’s thread sided with the guests.
Reddit user: “I love Disney, but damn you’re rude!”
Reddit user: “Don’t host parties if you don’t have the time to take care of your guests.”
“If you thought meeting two strangers in Disney costumes was important, then why didn’t you have a wedding? Another Reddit user commented. “You should have just sat down with those actors and taken photos and video to share with your friends.”
People were just as shocked on Twitter by the choice of the couple.
One user said, “This is the social agreement, people: You can have any kind of wedding, but your guests get gossip about it as much or as little as they like,” You can give them Mickey and Minnie as a substitute for food and they will be shocked at their opinions.
One Twitter user said, “Imagine yourself sitting at a table without food and watching two strangeos in costumes pose with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.”
