Tiger Woods, former number one in world golf, will not participate next week in the third major of the season, the US Open, in order to recover and be in a position to play in the British Open, a tournament that he has decided to prioritize.

Amid the schism created by Dustin Jonnson and other golfers over parting ways with the PGA Tour to participate in the new tournament network backed by a Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, the first event of which will be the LIV Golf Invitational at London’s Centurion Club, where prizes amount to 25 million dollars, Woods said that he had informed the Golf Association that he would not compete between the 16th and 19th at The Country Club of Brookline, where the Spanish Jon Rahm will defend the title.

“My body needs more time to get stronger for the big golf championships. I hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland and The (British) Open next month,” said the American.

Woods retired last month after the third day of the PGA Championship, the second tournament he played after reappearing at the Augusta Masters. The American was visibly conditioned by pain in the leg that was broken last year in a serious road accident.
