Police said that a Kentucky man was being interrogated by the sheriff’s department and fatally shot one deputies who were interviewing him.
Jody Cash, Calloway County Sheriff, died on May 16, after Gary Rowland (30) shot him with a concealed gun. Kentucky State Police released a statement Friday.
According to the release, Rowland was shot by a second deputy while he was being questioned.
Rowland was previously arrested for outstanding warrants for drug and firearm crimes. According to the news release, Rowland was taken to Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, western Kentucky. Cash and the second deputy, who were part of a DEA taskforce, began interviewing him to conduct an investigation that wasn’t related to the warrants.
The deputies took Rowland outside when he asked for a cigarette. According to the release, Rowland shot at Cash while standing in front the sheriff’s department.
Officials didn’t say where Rowland kept the weapon or how it was kept after he was arrested.
The statement states that Rowland was also hit by two other deputies. Cash and Rowland were both declared dead at a local hospital.
Cash was a 22-year veteran of law enforcement, including the Kentucky State Police as well as the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office.
Calloway County Sheriff Nicky Knight described him as a “dear friend” in a statement that was obtained by WPSD, NBC affiliate. Knight said that he had known Cash throughout his career. He remembered Cash’s son playing “Taps”, during annual tributes to fallen officers.
