The controversial Saudi Golf Super League crowned the champion of its first tournament this Saturday. South African Charl Schwartzel (-7) prevailed at the inaugural LIV Golf in London, taking home the $4 million check intended for the champion.
Schwartzel was champion of the Augusta Masters in 2011, a victory for which he pocketed 1.44 million dollars. An amount that he has almost multiplied by four this time, prevailing in a closed tournament of 48 participants and only three days.
In second place was his compatriot Hennie Du Plessis, who finished just one stroke behind the champion. Du Plessis, who in three years trying unsuccessfully to achieve the full card of the European Tour, did not reach 400,000 euros in prize money, pocketed a check for more than two million dollars in London. And it is that the enormous amount of money that is distributed in the LIV Golf goes far ahead of the sporting spectacle. At least for the moment.
As for the Spanish performance, Adrián Otaegui, who finished seventh with -2, was the best, earning $675,000, more than triple any of his three European Tour victories. Pablo Larrazábal finished in 14th place (270,000 dollars), Sergio García in 22nd (172,000) and the amateur David Puig
