The one group seeks to end abortion and the other, to end gun violence. Both of their names sound very similar.
March for Life is attempting to repeal Roe v. Wade. March for Our Lives, on the other hand, wants more gun control legislation. Both groups hold rallies in the country. March for Our Lives protests are scheduled for Saturday.
This is how you can tell the difference between these two protests.
While a difference in color scheme doesn’t necessarily indicate who’s who in a group, March for Life demonstrations frequently have signs in red or white. Blue and white are common colors for March for Our Lives. Participants on both sides of the argument can be seen at rallies wearing their colors.
The March for Our Lives organization doesn’t have an identifiable symbol that can be easily identified by supporters. If you see a rose emblem on signs or shirts at any march, protest, rally or demonstration, it is likely that you are at a March for Life event. According to the March for Life website a rose has been a symbol for life for many years.
As with the team color conversation and identifying an event based upon who is there is not a guarantee that you will be at the protest. It might be helpful to have some background information about each group.
One year after Roe v. Wade was ruled by the Supreme Court, the first March for Life took places in Washington, D.C. in January 1974. This was one year after federal abortion protections were established. According to the history page of March for Life, Nellie Gray, the founder of March for Life, decided to continue the march each year until the decision is overturned.
After a gunman opened fire at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland and shot 17 people, injuring another 17, the March for Our Lives movement was created. High school students who survived the massacre started the organization. The majority of the participants are young.
Checking each movement’s schedule is the best way to find out what protest is happening. Both March for Life (March for Our Lives) have an online listing of their activities with precise dates, times, and locations.
You can check social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to determine if you are at a March for Life, or March for Our Lives, event. Both groups are active on social media and there’s a good chance that someone from the protest will post photos or videos.
