Rep. Liz Cheney stated that former President Donald Trump is a “domestic menace” to the U.S., unlike any other. She told her fellow Republicans that they are also undermining America if they support Trump’s lies about an election stolen. She said that her party faces an existential choice.
Cheney stated that “Republicans can’t both be loyal to Donald Trump and the Constitution,” during a speech delivered at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, Simi Valley, Calif.
Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, is vice-chair of the House Jan.6 committee. After Cassidy Hutchinson, an ex-aide to Trump White House Chief Of Staff Mark Meadows, spoke, she shared shocking details about Trump’s actions on the day. She demanded that metal detectors be removed so his armed supporters don’t have to surrender their weapons.
Cheney stated that “we are facing a domestic threat like we’ve never faced before.” “And that is a former President who is trying to unravel the foundations our constitutional republic. He is supported by Republican leaders, elected officials, and others who are willing to be slaves to this dangerous and irrational person.”
“Some members of my party embrace former President Trump. She said that even after all the evidence, they continue to support his lies.” Cheney said that the threat was too grave to ignore or condone.
Hutchinson aEUR”, whose testimony also described Trump’s temper tantrums and an account of Trump trying to take control over his limousine, aEUR”, Cheney stated. She added that they include people who worked in the Trump White House, on Capitol Hill and on the Trump campaign.
Cheney compared Hutchinson’s patriotism to her bravery when she spoke out to “her superiors”, men many years younger than herself. Many of them hide behind executive privilege, anonymity and intimidation.
Cheney encouraged girls and young women to pursue leadership roles because they are vitally important.
She smiled with a wry smile, “These days, for most part, men run the world.” It is not working out that way.
Cheney acknowledged differences in policy with Democrats and criticized President Biden for his handling of the economy. She said that the country is now at the edge of an abyss and she must pull back.
She added, “One of my Democratic colleagues recently said to me that he was looking forward to the day when we could disagree again.” And I agree with that sentiment. Because if we can disagree about substance or policy again, it will signify that our politics are righteous” and that toxicity, racism, and other anti-democratic forces are rejected.
Cheney stated that the American people should expect excellence from their elected officials. She was echoing an idea she had earlier in her speech: “We cannot elect people who are more loyal themselves or to power than we are to our Constitution.”
This sentiment, once considered normal in U.S. politics was greeted with cheers and continued applause.
