According to police, a 20-year old woman was killed in her head while pushing her baby in a stroller in New York City.

The woman was walking in Manhattan with her 3-month old baby when, at 8:23 p.m. a man in black hoodie, black sweatpants and a black jacket shot her “from very near range”, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Swell stated.

The man fled immediately on foot.

The woman was discovered unconscious and taken to the hospital. Sewell stated that she was declared dead at 9:20 pm.

There have not been any arrests yet. Sewell could not confirm whether the shooting was domestic violence.

Eric Adams, New York City Mayor, stated that he met earlier with Letitia James, New York City Attorney General, about “ghost guns” or untraceable weapons, and then met with Kirsten Gillibrand, New York Senator, about gun trafficking.

Adams stated, “This whole day, we have been dealing with the problem of over-proliferation on our streets, how easily they are available, and how there is just not any fear in using these guns against innocent New Yorkers and that this is a consequence of that.”

On Thursday, a vigil was held at the scene of the shooting for the victim.

New York City’s gun arrests have reached a 28-year peak. According to NYPD, there were 2,007 gun-related arrests between January and May. This is an increase of 84 from the first five month of 2021.
