One-year-old died after his hot car was left parked outside Walgreens in Danielsville, Georgia.
Local police reported that officers responded to reports of a “unresponsive child” at Walgreens in Danielsville. This is 16 miles northeast from Athens.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office which is supporting Danielsville police in this case, the child’s mom worked at Walgreens.
According to WXIA (NBC’s Atlanta affiliate), the sheriff’s office believes the baby was in the hot car for at least three hours before his mother found him. The car’s interior temperature was more than 100 degrees, according to authorities.
WXIA reported that the 1-year-old was given emergency care and was rushed to Athens’ hospital where he was later declared dead.
According to Kids and Car Safety, this is the third death in a hot car in Georgia since January. Two of these deaths occurred this week.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald newspaper, the mother who works at Walgreens said she usually drops her children at different daycare centers before heading to work. The 30-year-old mother accidentally left one of her children in the car on Thursday.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, the mother didn’t realize that she had never stopped at the second daycare center before starting work.
The investigation into the death of the child is ongoing.
