Real Madrid would have informed Pablo Laso on Monday that he has decided to dispense with his services as coach, according to various reports from Madrid media such as Marca or El País. The drastic decision would have to do with the unfavorable medical reports of the man from Vitoria, who suffered a heart problem on June 5.
Laso, 54, came to the Whites’ bench in 2011 and since then has added a whopping 22 titles, including two Euroleagues (2015 and 2018), establishing one of the greatest dynasties in the history of the Real Madrid basketball section.
This goodbye has been rushed in the last few hours and it will be Chus Mateo, Laso’s assistant and who has served as coach in the final stretch of the Endesa League playoffs, who will be chosen to lead the Madrid ship from next season.
Laso had another year on his contract with the white club and everything indicated that his intention was to return to directing the team once he had recovered from his medical problems.
It should be remembered that Laso had to undergo a catheterization after suffering a heart condition on June 5 and was hospitalized for two days, stepping aside in his job as Real Madrid head coach. Although he returned to training shortly after, it was Chus Mateo who led Madrid in the final leg of the season, including the Endesa League final against Barça, which ended with the Whites as champions.
