The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, promised this Saturday to repeal the Democratic Memory Law if the Spaniards elect him as president of the Government and advanced that he will try to do so “not only with the votes of the PP and other parliamentary groups, but also with the votes of the next PSOE”.
“Under these conditions, it is neither memory nor democratic,” he said at the closing of the Miguel Ángel Blanco Summer School, which was held in Plaza San Pelayo de Ermua under the organization of New Generations (NNGG) and the European PP . As is traditional, the popular have turned to this act, which this year coincides with the 25th anniversary of the kidnapping and murder of the PP councilor in this town at the hands of ETA.
Feijóo arrived at around 11:00 a.m. together with the councilor’s sister, Marimar Blanco, and former Prime Minister José María Aznar to a standing ovation from the attendees, who gave them three minutes of applause. Later, he accompanied the sister of Miguel Ángel Blanco to raise a crown of white flowers and place her on an empty throne that presided over the act in memory of the assassinated PP mayor.
The president of the popular group gave the closure of the act to Marimar Blanco and dedicated a few words in memory of the councilor assassinated by ETA in 1997, in addition to current political affairs. On this last matter, he said that he feels “an enormous repugnance” that “ETA’s heirs” are “those who dictate to the democratic government the terms of democratic memory.”
“We have to commit ourselves and I promise to repeal the Democratic Memory Law. We will repeal the so-called Democratic Memory Law and I will work to get not only the votes of the PP and all the parliamentary groups, but also the votes of the next PSOE so that together we can reestablish memory and justice”, he declared.
The former Prime Minister José María Aznar has asked the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, that the “indecent footprint” of the “heirs of terror”, in reference to EH Bildu, be erased from the Democratic Memory Law when the PP reach the government.
“Not a single comma of these murderers will ever be acceptable in any memory project, and that is why I want to ask everyone, especially Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the next Prime Minister, that we project this commitment into the future and that the indecent mark of the heirs of terror is erased and that the PP will work for that to happen sooner rather than later”, Aznar stated.
Marimar Blanco showed her displeasure with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, whom she demanded to break with EH Bildu because “any negotiation” with the nationalists is “a clear insult to the victims, their memory and their dignity”.
