Selena Quintanilla, better known only as Selena and baptized as the queen of Tejano music, releases an album 27 years after her death. All thanks to her father and her sister, Abraham and Suzette Quintanilla, who wanted to pay tribute to her on the day of her death. That is why they have released Moonchild Mixes, a new album with 10 previously unreleased songs and three remixes.
The disc contains songs that Selena recorded when she was between 13 and 16 years old, but which have now been polished to sound as if she had entered the studio.
The result has them “excited”, as they themselves have recognized to Efe. At 83, the patriarch is still “amazed and grateful for the public’s support and affection for my daughter, which shows us that she never really died. The public still remembers her. They have not forgotten her and have been waiting for a project So”.
As a family they chose the name Moonchild Mixes. “Selena is a Greek name that means goddess of the moon. She named her clothing brand like that and it seemed perfect for this new era of her music,” says her sister.
Cumbia is one of the musical genres that Selena Quintanilla explored the most. Songs like Baila esta cumbia and Techno cumbia were some of her biggest hits along with Bidi bidi bom bom and Como la flor. All of them produced to the rhythm of cumbia For this reason, the family decided to forcefully incorporate the genre into her new album. The Quintanillas announced that they have another 40 recordings of Selena saved, but they still don’t know if they will continue to release music.
Selena Quintanilla was murdered at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club, on March 31, 1995. Today she would be 51 years old.
