Bad Bunny became the big favorite of the American Music Awards (abbreviated as AMAs) this Thursday by getting eight nominations, ahead of Beyoncé, Drake and Taylor Swift, who received six nominations each.
Artists nominated at the AMAs are chosen based on record sales, internet streams and artist popularity. Once nominated, they are voted by the audience and not by a specialized jury. For this reason, the leadership of the Puerto Rican represents a paradigm shift in the awards, since for decades they have focused exclusively on Anglo-Saxon and American artists.
The 8 nominations of the Spanish-speaking rapper demonstrate the great boom of music in Spanish, which is beginning to conquer other spaces apart from the Latin American Music Awards, which have always been delivered in a ceremony apart from the AMAs.
The father of Un Verano sin ti is now competing for the awards for best tour of the year, best music video for Me Porto Bonito, best pop artist, best pop album, best Latin album, best Latin artist and best Latin song. He is also nominated for the most important award, artist of the year, along with Adele, Beyoncé, Drake, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift and The Weekend, the most established artists in the American music industry today.
The rest of the artists nominated in the Latin categories are: Farruko, J Balvin, Jhayco and Rauw Alejandro, for best Latin artist; Anitta, Becky G, Kali Uchis, Karol G and Rosalía, for best Latin artist and Banda MS, Caliber 50, Eslabon Armado, Grupo Firme and Yahritza Y la Esencia de ella, for best group.
For their part, the candidates for best Latin album are Motomami by Rosalía, La 167 by Farruko, Jose by J Balvin, Vice Versa by Rauw Alejandro and the aforementioned Un Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny.
The AMAs ceremony will be held on November 20, where all the winners will be announced. The event will take place just a week after the Latin Grammys, for which Bad Bunny is also the favorite with 10 nominations, including best album of the year.
