The comedian Jerrod Carmichael will present the 80th edition of the Golden Globes that will take place on January 10, as announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organizing entity of these film awards.

Carmichael has been chosen by HFPA and NBC, which will televise the awards, to host a gala with which they intend to recover the prestige lost in the last year and a half due to various corruption scandals within the association.

According to the president of the HFPA, Helen Hoehne, in a statement, Carmichael meets the ideal profile because “his talent” has served to entertain the public but also to “invite reflection, something very important in these times”.

The comedian won the Emmy for Best Writing for a Comedy Special Program last September for Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel, a personal story in which he revealed his homosexuality and how he experienced the reactions when he told his family and friends.

In addition, he starred in three seasons of the renowned sitcom The Carmichael Show on NBC itself from 2015 to 2017, and has been nominated for an Emmy for his appearance on the famous Saturday Night Live program as a guest host last April.

The organization of the Golden Globes faces the challenge of recovering the prestige lost after an investigation by the Los Angeles Times newspaper in which a series of practices of corruption and influence peddling by its members were uncovered.

The investigation revealed that many members of the association did not even work in the media and denounced the gifts that the studios gave to the associates, thus questioning the legitimacy of the voting for these awards.

Industry rejection made last year’s ceremony a totally lackluster event, not televised and with little media coverage.

On the 12th, the actors George Lopez and Mayan Lopez (Lopez vs. Lopez) will reveal the nominations for these awards. On previous occasions, the Golden Globes have been hosted by well-known faces such as Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Seth Meyers or Jimmy Fallon.
