Enrique López has formalized his withdrawal as a PP militant. The still Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Interior of the Community of Madrid will continue in the Government of Isabel Díaz Ayuso until the end of the legislature but is moving a little further from active politics. His movement is a reaction to the gradual forced removal from the PP command table since the arrival of Alberto Núñez Feijóo to the national leadership.

According to the newspaper ABC, López (Cacabelos, León, 59 years old) has communicated his resignation to the party’s general secretary, Cuca Gamarra, after having previously transferred it to the Madrid president.

In statements sent to the media, the still counselor has clarified that his loss as a militant “does not mean renouncing the principles and values ??that the party’s ideology represents”, and has assured that he will continue to work “with greater zeal and dedication” in the Government of the Community of Madrid, as long as it has “the trust” of Díaz Ayuso.

López was Secretary of Justice during Pablo Casado’s stage in the national leadership of the PP, and also one of the strong members of the Ayuso government. But, after a first legislature as number two of the Executive, he was singled out after the internal war between the former popular leader and the president of the Community.

The counselor, in fact, was absent from the press conference that Ayuso offered on February 18, 2022 to defend the legality of the health contract linked to his brother and signed by the Community of Madrid in the midst of a pandemic.

The regional government announced early in the morning that López, a trusted person of the National Directorate and Secretary of Justice and the Interior of the PP, would offer a press conference to explain the contract together with the Minister of Health, Enrique Ruiz Escudero , and the Economy, Finance and Employment, Javier Fernández-Lasquetty.

But, finally, López was deleted, alleging that he had an act with the TSJM that they could not postpone. In such a way that the operators of the Puerta del Sol had to dismantle at full speed the lectern that corresponded to him to occupy before the press.

This decision to avoid positioning itself during the crisis that opened the channel to the PP made the regional government automatically lose weight. Being relegated days later with the appointment of Enrique Ossorio as vice president, a newly created position at that time since it had not been created in the legislature after the break in the coalition with Ciudadanos in 2019.

Before the arrival of Alberto Núñez Feijóo in Genoa to replace Casado, López made his position as PP Secretary of Justice and Interior available to the party, which he assumed in January 2020 to replace Rafael Catalá.

With this formalization of his withdrawal from the party and after the tense relationship with the Madrid president after the internal war in the PP, it remains to be determined if he will continue as a counselor in the event that Ayuso wins at the polls, or if he will return to the judiciary .
