The Generalitat confirmed that the Davis Cup will be held, as planned, in Valencia and that work is already underway on this new edition, after some uncertainty had been generated once the Kosmos company, with which the last year a contract to be one of the tournament venues, will cease to be the organizer of this tournament due to economic disagreements with the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
The president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, said in an interview on the Onda Cero radio station that they have reached an agreement with the ITF “with the aim of promoting the international projection of the Valencian Community, attracting tourism and promoting sport”.
This Wednesday a work meeting took place between senior officials of the Consell and the ITF management leadership, the body that will be in charge of the direct organization of the event after having broken its relations with Kosmos in mid-January.
The meeting was attended by the Generalitat, the regional secretary for Tourism, Francesc Colomer, the general director of Tourism, Herick Campos, and the general director of Sports, Josep Miquel Moya; while the ITF’s president, David Haggerty, the executive director, Kris Dent, and the entity’s manager, Gonzalo Cernuda, were present.
The meeting was also attended by members of the Valencia Provincial Council and the city council, as well as representatives of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation and the Valencian Community Tennis Federation, which this year are joining the entire coordination of the event.
Herick Campos assessed the impact of the previous Davis Cup in Valencia and pointed out that it had an advertising return of more than 10 million euros. “It was an extraordinary success, both for the projection that the Valencian Community achieved and for the direct impact that the event has for the territory, due to the attendance of organizers, participants and the public”, indicated the general director.
