Laia Sanz continues to expand her record behind the wheel. The driver from Corbera de Llobregat achieved her first victory in Saudi Arabia in Extreme E, the electric SUV competition, which started its third edition this weekend with the Desert X-Prix. Curiously, the Acciona-Sainz team’s first win comes without its starting driver, Carlos Sainz, who was out due to a back injury that was hurt in the Dakar rally.
If in Saturday’s race the Acciona-Sainz Team had to be content with second position, in the final this Sunday the Ekström-Sanz tandem was the fastest from the start. The Swede got off to a brilliant start to take a slight lead in a very tight start with the five cars separated by just 7 seconds. Before the change of drivers, the Spanish car opened a small gap.
When the steering wheel was exchanged, Laia Sanz kept the pulse of Molly Taylor from Veloce Racing, who hugged but finished second, at 5s527. Third was the Rosberg X Racing of Kristoffersson and Kottulinsky, and fourth, the Cupra of Al Attiyah and Andersson.
Acciona-Sainz, who could not achieve any victory last year, starts this 2023 edition in an incredible way with a second place in the first round and a victory in the second, which allows them to tie for the lead with Veloce Racing .
