Currently, it does not have a clear origin, nor is it a cure, so the treatments applied to those who suffer from it are focused on alleviating their symptoms and offering them the best possible quality of life. However, these are not the only unknowns that the medical community deals with regarding this pathology. Fibromyalgia is a disease that consists of chronic pain in the musculoskeletal system, which affects muscles and bones. And, although it might be thought that it is essentially a physical problem, some specialists believe that fibromyalgia could actually be a psychiatric disorder.
So far there is no scientific evidence that this could be the case, but what is undeniable is the great impact of the psychological level of fibromyalgia on patients. This is how researchers from the Guadalajara General and University Hospital analyze it in their article “Scientific evidence of psychological aspects of fibromyalgia.” This work specifies that up to 47% of people with this disease could suffer from some type of anxiety disorder.
In addition to the stiffness that the body experiences, constant fatigue and, especially, pain in the lower back, neck, shoulders or knees, fibromyalgia patients must deal with psychological symptoms. This disease requires treatment to deal with the physical symptoms, but it is also essential to attend to the psychological and psychiatric level.
