The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda (Mitma) has submitted to public information the informative study of the new AVE station that will be located at the Girona airport.

The document analyzes the two possible alternatives, both located in the vicinity of the Train Overtaking and Parking Post (PAET), located on the AVE axis, at the height of the municipality of Vilobí d’Onyar.

The first alternative would force that PAET to be expanded from four to six tracks, so that the two outer ones would end up being used for stops. This option would leave the airport at a distance of approximately 1.1 kilometers and would force the use of a bus to cover the journey between both buildings.

The second alternative, the closest to the terminal, consists of extending the PAET tracks a few meters further north, at the height of the N-156 road, the road that connects the N-II with the airport. The connection would be made through a pedestrian walkway that would link the station lobby with the terminal.

The Mitma analysis determines that this second alternative “is the one that best meets the objectives pursued” and is the one proposed in the informative study.

The station will be planned in two phases and, as explained in November by the Minister Raquel Sánchez and the Secretary for Infrastructures, Xavier Flores, it could be a reality in the year 2026. A first suitable for heavy traffic, which allows maximum use of the spaces offered by the current circulations of the line. In a second phase, exclusive shuttle trains would be included to connect Girona airport with Barcelona.

This second phase will force the construction of a single-track branch, some 3.8 kilometers south of the current PAET building “and which will allow the incorporation of shuttles to the line to Barcelona”.
