The food samples taken by technicians from the Public Health Agency of Catalonia in the Girona restaurant where food poisoning occurred, which has affected at least 48 people, determine that the cause was salmon.
Of all those affected, two required hospital admission. They have now been discharged. Those intoxicated began the first symptoms between March 17 and 24 and all of them coincided in having eaten at the restaurant, specialized in Asian food, between March 15 and 22.
All of them had high fever, up to 39ºC, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain to a greater or lesser degree and were treated in different hospitals.
The Epidemiological Surveillance technicians surveyed those affected and analyzed stool samples to determine the origin of the food poisoning. The results of the 26 samples analyzed were positive for salmonella. And this bacterium was found in the salmon served at the restaurant, which has Japanese cuisine among its specialties.
Technicians from Protecció de la Salut, together with those from the Girona City Council, have carried out several inspections of the premises to review the hygienic conditions and food handling. It so happens that the same restaurant already intoxicated about twenty people last summer.
