The Catalan politician, economist and businessman Josep Piqué died early Thursday morning at the 12 de Octubre hospital in Madrid at the age of 68. The family has announced it through a statement, advanced by the journalist Carlos Herrera in La Cope. The PP has confirmed it minutes later.

His wife, the journalist and former director of Antena 3 News, Gloria Lomana, was dismayed by the death of what she has said is the love of her life, and she has transmitted it through her social networks.

“Thank you for the love you are transmitting to me. For this reason, you will be able to say goodbye to him tomorrow at the M-30 Funeral Home, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. His integrity, strength, love for family, work and life will always be with us”, says the one who was the ex-minister’s wife.

Since May 22, 2009, Lomana was married for the second time to Josep Piqué, who was president of the Vueling airline, as well as former Minister of Industry and Foreign Affairs in the Governments of the Popular Party.

The former Catalan businessman, economist and politician held different portfolios during the PP governments of José María Aznar (1996 and 2003), including Minister of Industry, Foreign Affairs and Science and Technology. From October 2002 to July 2007 he was the president of the Popular Party of Catalonia (PPC). Piqué was also a regular contributor to La Vanguardia. After his time in politics, Piqué returned to the business world holding various positions, many of them linked to the aeronautical sector. On November 12, 2007, he was appointed president of Vueling, a position he left on August 12, 2013, the year the IAG Group took control of the airline. During his tenure the company merged with Clickair. Shortly afterwards he suffered a ‘mild brain haemorrhage’.

As announced by his widow, the former minister’s funeral chapel will be open tomorrow, Friday, April 7, at the Funeral Home on the M-30 in Madrid from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
