The tragedy has struck the Biscayan town of Sestao in the last hours. A 12-year-old boy died yesterday afternoon, Sunday, after being hit by a ball while playing soccer at a local school.
The events occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the Begoñako Andra Mari La Salle school, which opens its doors for children to play on holidays. The minor was hit in the chest with a ball while he was playing with several friends, in the presence of family and friends. As a result of the shot, the minor fell to the ground and suffered convulsions and vomits, according to the newspaper El Correo and confirmed by sources familiar with the case.
The young man received the assistance of local police officers in a few minutes, first, and then health workers, who traveled in two ambulances to the place. The young man was in cardiorespiratory arrest.
The medical team tried to revive the young man for an hour; however, after 8:30 p.m., he confirmed his death.
Relatives of the minor, of Senegalese origin, were treated right there by a team of psychologists from the Basque Health Service-Osakidetza.
The Ertzaintza is now investigating the exact causes of the fatal accident and whether, indeed, the shot caused him to collapse or there are other causes.
