The video broadcast on Real Madrid television on Monday night that tried to link Barça with the Franco regime caused a wave of indignation among Barcelona fans, although the Blaugrana club opted for institutional silence and not to issue any statement. Within Barcelona, they consider that the video about the supposed favorable treatment that the entity received during the dictatorship “falls under its own weight and is a ridiculous exercise from the historical and intellectual point of view.” Within the leadership of Barça, this maneuver by Madrid is considered a strategic error that can be dismantled just by taking a look at different episodes that the Blaugrana team suffered during the almost four decades of Francoism.

In Barcelona they consider that reacting to what does not make any sense would be to catch up with Madrid. They are surprised that yes, in the sphere of the white team, no voices arise that bring out the colors of the entity chaired by Florentino Pérez. Barça attended with satisfaction the different reactions that arose in Catalonia to complain about what they consider a clear attack on history.

The journalist and presidential adviser to Laporta Jordi Finestres, an expert on Francoism, published a tweet after the dissemination of the white video in which the Barça shield appeared with the initials that Francoism imposed on it, when the club changed from being FC Barcelona to CF Barcelona. He also put a link to a series of articles in the magazine Sàpiens about the vicissitudes that Barça suffered during the regime.

The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, did the same, adding the following sentence: “Recommended reading”.

The Generalitat went further and its spokesperson, Patrícia Plaja, asked Real Madrid to remove the video. “It is such a crude manipulation of history that it seems manual. It’s fake news and it’s indecent. It is irresponsible, offensive and an insult to the thousands of people who suffered under the Franco regime, including FC Barcelona, beginning with the president at the time, Josep Suñol, who was shot by the regime and perhaps Real Madrid does not remember him. . It would be nice if he removed the video and apologized for crossing a red line.”

The former president of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, also spoke. “What Madrid is doing with Barça, both the persecution and the effort to impose an official story in which the oppressors are victims of the oppressed, is the same thing they have been doing for decades with Catalonia.”

What Barça did was contact the ACB. The body that governs the basketball league retweeted the Madrid video. From the club, the ACB was urged to rectify and apologize, as it did with a tweet and a statement. “For reasons beyond our control, last night a publication that has nothing to do with our competition was retweeted from the official ACB account. Although said retweet was deleted the minute it was published, we apologize to FC Barcelona and to anyone who may have felt wronged.”

On the other hand, some former Madrid players applauded the white club’s initiative. It was the case of Casillas, Arbeloa and Marcelo. The most expressive was the former goalkeeper. “Father (a form of praise) total. Boom!” Casillas wrote. Arbeloa retweeted the video and accompanied it with a white heart, something in which Marcelo and the goalkeeper of the women’s team Misa imitated him. The latter deleted it.

Meanwhile, Laporta, who described Florentino Pérez’s club on Monday as “the regime’s team on duty”, spent this Tuesday in Madrid. He went to the Palacio del Pardo, Franco’s former residence, to attend the delivery of the National Sports Awards, since one of the winners was Alexia Putellas. The Blaugrana president will also be in Madrid this Wednesday for the LaLiga assembly.
