Getafe’s defeat yesterday Wednesday at the Coliseum against AlmerÃa (1-2) has precipitated the dismissal of the azulones coach, Quique Sánchez Flores, on Thursday. Getafe has gone five games without winning (their last victory was on March 19 against Sevilla) and tonight they could fall to relegation positions if Valencia beat Valladolid at Mestalla.
To replace Quique in these seven days that remain in the league championship, the name that sounds the most is that of José Bordalás, who trained the azulones from 2016 to 2021, spending the following season, 2021-22, to train Valencia. In the current one he was without a team.
Quique Flores had joined the team in October 2021 to replace Michel. It was the seventh day and Getafe was bottom. For the man from Madrid, it was the third time he had been in charge of the Coliseum bench, where he had already been in the 2004-05 campaign (his contract ended and he signed for Valencia) and in 2014-15, where he left halfway course of their own free will.
Although the previous season (2021-22) ended successfully and the team was saved, this one has been lopsided from the beginning. Quique’s bad relationship with the sports director, Ramón Planes, ended with the departure of the latter, who has just signed for Betis. Since the return of the World Cup things have gotten worse for Getafe and the Coliseum stands, generally peaceful, began to chant “Quique go now”, a classic for all coaches with problems.
Also key in Quique’s dismissal were the statements by goalkeeper David Soria at the end of the match against AlmerÃa: “Anyone who doesn’t fight is that they don’t even love themselves. It can’t be that the team falls with eight to go days. We are risking the bread of our families and it seems that some of them are going through a bit… It cannot be that they are not giving everything”, he affirmed. Ãngel Torres, the club’s president, has taken note and this morning he came to the conclusion of changing coaches to try to straighten the course and avoid a relegation that looks very close.
